Do You Need a Mac For College?

This article is not a Mac vs PC fanboy debate. Instead this is more question, especially if you’re in school, if you really need a Mac, or just something to write your essays on. Let’s put brand aside, and focus on the hardware/software and what you really need without getting too technical.

I bought my MacBook pro for $1256, with a $150 BestBuy student discount. I was actually supposed to buy a Microsoft Surface Pro, which at the time I think was around $400. Obviously it’s a huge price difference, but I had just gotten my financial aid check and had money to spend.

So why’d I get a Mac? Honestly, I think it was the brand appeal that made me choose a MacBook over the Surface. Since then, I recommend Macs, but only if you plan to work on it extensively.

I Need It For School

One thing I noticed is that a lot of college students want Macs and that a lot of students have Macs. But you don’t need a Mac if you’re in college. Professionals use Macs because the software is responsive and smooth.

But if you’re just going to be watching Netflix and writing essays, you don’t need a Mac; you can do those on any laptop. Even though I’m a Mac lover, I don’t recommend shelling out over $1000 for one just to do homework on it.

But I’m a Music Major/Want to Produce Music

I’ve heard this so many times. If you want to make music, you’re most likely going to download Pro Tools or Ableton. Sure, Macs come loaded with Garageband which you could use to make some cool tunes, but if you want to make serious music, you’re going to download the previous two. Logic Pro is exclusive for Mac, but that doesn’t mean you have to use that specific program. In this case, you would be buying the Apple brand, and the program itself.

Why I Generally Recommend Macs

So there is a real big reason I love my MacBook: it’s never broken down on me. Ok, not never, but the one time it did was when I spilled water onto and into the keyboard, frying it. And you know what? A day later it recovered and started working as it normally did. Aside from that no other problems. But I hear about friends of mine having computer problems, it’s never a Mac.

Conclusion

Ok, so I have a Mac, and I love it. Like I just mentioned, I’ve never had a real problem with my Mac; but every time a friend of mine has a problem with their laptop, it’s never a Mac.

I only recommend getting a Mac if you plan to spend hours working on it. Also, if you have the money to pay for it, and that means having enough money AFTER to pay rent and afford food.

If you’re goal is just to do homework and use the internet, you can buy any other laptop and save so much money.

If you’re looking for something for school and you’re on a budget, you can buy a Lenovo laptop for $249.99 as opposed to a MacBook for $1299.99.

I guess the questions you need to ask yourself are “What do I really want? Do I need a MacBook or do I need something to get my work done? Why can’t I do the same work on a PC? Can I actually afford a Mac right now?”
