iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR: The Epic Guide to Apple’s New Phones

On September 12, 2018, Apple unveiled three new iPhones during its annual iPhone reveal event. The iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and the iPhone XR are three premium, high-end handsets that offer impressive features for a big price.

The reveal of the new iPhones comes a year after Apple showed off the iPhone X, its (then) flagship phone which was promoted as the future of mobile technology. So, Apple was always going to have a hard time topping that with whatever came next.

But has Apple successfully made three new phones that are worth buying? How much do the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR cost? And when will they go on sale anyway? We answer all of these questions and more in our epic guide to Apple’s new smartphones.

What Are the iPhone XS, XS Max, XR Specs?

First things first: before you can get enthused about Apple’s new handsets you need to know what it is they actually offer! We’ve highlighted the need to know specs, explaining all of the technical jargon if you aren’t up on your mobile tech terms.

iPhone XS Specs:

  • 5.8-inch Super AMOLED display (with 3D Touch and True Tone)
  • 4GB RAM, hexacore processor, Apple A12 Bionic chip
  • 12-megapixel dual camera (rear), 7-megapixel selfie camera
  • 2658 mAh battery with a battery life of up to 20 hours (talk time), 60 hours (music play)
  • Storage options of 68/256/512GB

With a large but reasonable screen that displays things in crystal clear quality, the iPhone XS allows you to stream the latest TV shows and blockbuster movies in the quality their creators intended. The cameras ensure that your selfies and landscape photos look impressive and the RAM and processors mean the phone can keep up with you even if you’re doing something more intensive. Plus, the battery life means that you’ll be able to use the iPhone XS for longer.

iPhone XS Max specs:

  • 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display (with 3D Touch and True Tone)
  • 4GB RAM, hexacore processor, Apple A12 Bionic chip
  • 12-megapixel dual camera (rear), 7-megapixel selfie camera
  • 3174mAh battery with a battery life of up to 25 hours (talk time), 65 hours (music play)
  • Storage options 64/256/512GB

As you can see, the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max have near-identical technical specifications. The big differences are the screen size and the battery life. The iPhone XS Max display is significantly larger than the screen of the iPhone XS and its battery life lasts a little longer too. This makes it an ideal phone for those who find themselves traveling a lot or working on the go (e.g on the commute to work).

iPhone XR specs:

  • 6.1-inch IPS LCD display (with True Tone)
  • 3GB RAM, hexacore processor, Apple A12 Bionic chip
  • 12-megapixel camera (rear), 7-megapixel selfie camera
  • 2942 mAh battery with a battery life of up to 25 hours (talk time), 65 hours (music play)
  • Storage options 64/128/256GB

The iPhone XR is a slightly more affordable, high-end phone from Apple. With a sizeable, quality display and 3GB of RAM, this phone will do most of what you ask of it but you’re paying slightly less for slightly lower specs. It is the perfect phone for those who have less money to spend but don’t need the cutting edge specs offered by the XS or the XS Max.

What Are the iPhone XS/XS Max/XR Prices?

Although they are all part of the iPhone X family, the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR have vastly different prices. And, because these are premium, high-end handsets, they don’t come cheap.

iPhone XS Price: There are three iPhone XS prices, one for each storage size. The 64GB model costs $999, the 256GB model costs $1,149, and the 512GB model costs $1,349.

iPhone XS Max Price: iPhone XS Max prices are slightly higher. The 64GB model costs $1,048, the 256GB model costs $1,249, and the 512GB model costs $1,449. So you’re paying $100 more than the iPhone XS at each level.

iPhone XR Price: The iPhone XR costs a little less than its siblings. The 64GB model costs $749, the 128GB model costs $799, and the 256GB model costs $899.

Even the iPhone XR, which Apple is pitching as its ‘cost-saving alternative’ doesn’t come cheap. All three of the new iPhones are very pricey and if you just don’t have that money to spare right now, you may feel disappointed.

But it’s worth noting that if you’re patient, you can save a significant amount of money by purchasing them refurbished. You could potentially save hundreds of dollars on a refurbished model compared to buying brand new. (More on buying refurbished later in this post).

When Will the New iPhones Be Released?

Good news: the iPhone XS and XS Max have already been released. The new handsets launched on September 21, 2018. Though, they flew off shelves and the demand means that they are now out of stock from Apple itself and at many of its retail partners.

The iPhone XR release date is October 26, 2018, though it will be available to pre-order beginning October 19.

Unfortunately, it looks like you’ll have to wait a couple of weeks or so regardless of which new iPhone X model you’re looking to purchase.

When Will the iPhone XS/XS Max/XR Be Refurbished?

How many days until iPhone refurbished

As mentioned, you can save a substantial amount of money by buying the new iPhones as refurbished instead of brand new. However, the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR are not yet available as refurbished.

Thankfully, you probably won’t have to wait too long for them to become refurbished.

The iPhone X was released on November 3, 2017, and it was available as refurbished on January 6, 2018, which is just three months later. It cost $799 for the refurbished 64GB model, which is a saving of $200. Comparatively, the iPhone 7 was released on September 16, 2016, and it was first available as refurbished from December 23, 2016.

Refurbished iPhone timeline data

Refurbished stock depends on a variety of factors including whether or not people are trading in their iPhone XS/XS Max/XR handsets and how long it takes a refurbished retailer to prepare the phones, testing, cleaning and repairing the phones (if necessary) to ensure that they look and work like new.

However, based on averages, the iPhone XS/XS Max/XR may be refurbished in just a few months. We estimate that the iPhone XS and XS Max will be available as refurbished by December 5, 2018 and the iPhone XR will be available as refurbished by January 9, 2019.
