Yes, for most buyers. A refurbished Mac mini performs like a new one for less money, and a desktop that never leaves your desk carries little of the risk of a used laptop. On 7 October 2026, Back Market listed the M1 Mac mini with 8 GB and 256 GB at $488, about 30% below Apple's $699 launch price. eBay Refurbished listed the M4 with 16 GB and 256 GB at $729, $170 less than Apple's new M6 Mac mini with the same memory and storage at $899.
Why the Mac mini works well refurbished
- No battery to wear out: The battery is the part that ages worst on a used laptop. A Mac mini has none.
- Little cosmetic risk: It is a small aluminum box that sits on a desk, so even a Grade B unit will likely look nearly perfect.
- Bring your own peripherals: It comes without a display, keyboard or mouse, so you pair it with equipment you already own.
- Long software support: macOS 27 runs on every Mac mini with Apple silicon, back to the 2020 M1.
When it is not worth it
- Intel Mac mini (2018 and older): Its last macOS version is macOS Sequoia 15, because macOS 27 runs only on Apple silicon Macs. Only buy one for basic use or as a home server.
- 8 GB of memory for heavy work: Memory cannot be upgraded on Apple silicon models. Choose 16 GB or more for video editing, music production or heavy multitasking.
- You want the newest chip: The M6 Mac mini went on sale on 22 September 2026, and we found no refurbished listings for it in the US on 7 October 2026. RefurbMe's Time-to-Refurb for the Mac mini is 128 days in the US (October 2026), so expect the first units in early 2027. Our page on Mac mini generations tracks each model.
