iPhone 16e vs iPhone 15 Refurbished: Which to Buy

The iPhone 16e runs the A18 chip and supports Apple's full Apple Intelligence suite. The iPhone 15 runs the older A16 Bionic, which Apple Intelligence does not reach. That single line decides the matchup for most buyers. The rest is a trade between the 16e's efficiency and the 15's camera and accessory ecosystem.

According to RefurbMe's own tracking, the Refurbished Apple Price Index (RAPI), a new iPhone reaches the refurbished market a median of 82 days after Apple's release (Time-to-Refurb, as of July 2026). Both of these phones cleared that window long ago, so refurbished stock is deep and prices have already settled. You can watch the live figure on RefurbMe's iPhone stats page.

Refurbished iPhone 16e and iPhone 15 compared side by side

iPhone 16e vs iPhone 15: specs at a glance

Both phones share a 6.1 inch OLED Super Retina XDR display, USB-C charging, and Face ID. They split on chip, camera count, and the two features Apple reserves for its mainline phones: the Dynamic Island and MagSafe.

Feature iPhone 16e iPhone 15
Chip A18 A16 Bionic
Apple Intelligence Yes No
Rear cameras Single 48MP Dual: 48MP main + 12MP ultrawide
Front display Notch Dynamic Island
MagSafe No Yes
Modem Apple C1 Qualcomm
Video playback Up to 26 hours Up to 20 hours
Charging port USB-C USB-C
Launch price (new) $599 $799
Refurbished from (Jul 2026) Around $341 Around $365

The iPhone 16e launched on February 28, 2025 at $599. The iPhone 15 launched in September 2023 at $799. Two years and one tier apart, they now meet in the same refurbished price band.

Refurbished price in 2026: iPhone 16e vs iPhone 15

Refurbished, the two phones land close together. On RefurbMe in July 2026, an unlocked 128GB iPhone 16e in good condition starts around $341, and a 128GB iPhone 15 in good condition starts around $365. The iPhone 17 launch pulled previous-generation prices down across the board, and the 16e fell fastest because it was the cheapest of its generation to begin with.

With about $25 between them, price barely tips the decision, which is unusual for a comparison. When two phones cost nearly the same, you buy on features. Back Market carries the broadest stock for both models on RefurbMe, and in the US Gazelle often holds the lowest unlocked iPhone 15 listing, so those two are the simplest places to line them up.

Chip and performance: A18 vs A16 Bionic

The A18 is two generations ahead of the A16 Bionic, and it shows in sustained work: gaming, heavy multitasking, and on-device AI. For scrolling, messaging, and video the gap is invisible. Both chips drive iOS smoothly today.

The real dividend of the A18 is its future. Apple supports iPhones with software for years, and the newer chip will hold up longer as iOS demands grow. A two-year-younger processor is the strongest argument for the 16e as a long-hold device.

Apple Intelligence: only the iPhone 16e qualifies

Apple Intelligence runs on the iPhone 16e and does not run on the iPhone 15. This is a hardware line, not a software toggle. The A16 Bionic lacks the memory and Neural Engine headroom Apple requires, so no update will bring the feature set to the iPhone 15.

That covers writing tools, the smarter Siri, notification summaries, Genmoji, and Image Playground. If those features matter to you, the iPhone 15 is a dead end and the 16e is the only choice between these two.

Apple Intelligence is the single largest difference between these phones. If it does not interest you, the iPhone 15's camera and MagSafe support may matter more than the newer chip.

Cameras: single 48MP vs dual with ultrawide

The iPhone 16e has one rear camera: a 48MP main sensor. The iPhone 15 has two: the same class of 48MP main plus a 12MP ultrawide. For everyday photos of people and scenes, both shoot sharp, bright images that hold up well.

The ultrawide is the gap. It captures landscapes, tight interiors, and group shots that a single lens cannot frame, and it feeds macro-style close focus. If you shoot wide scenes often, the iPhone 15 gives you a tool the 16e simply does not have. If you mostly point and shoot at normal range, the 16e's single lens covers you.

Design and extras: Dynamic Island and MagSafe

The iPhone 15 has the Dynamic Island, the pill-shaped cutout that turns alerts, timers, and live activities into an interactive strip. The iPhone 16e keeps the older notch. It works fine, but it does nothing beyond housing the camera.

MagSafe is the bigger practical loss on the 16e. The iPhone 15 snaps onto MagSafe chargers, wallets, mounts, and stands; the 16e does not, and falls back to slower standard wireless charging. If you already own MagSafe accessories, that ecosystem is a real reason to choose the iPhone 15.

Battery and efficiency: the C1 modem advantage

The iPhone 16e rates up to 26 hours of video playback against the iPhone 15's 20 hours. Part of that comes from the A18's efficiency and part from Apple's own C1 modem, the first Apple-designed cellular chip, which sips less power than the Qualcomm modem in the iPhone 15.

In daily use that means the 16e is the phone more likely to reach bedtime on a single charge. For heavy users and travelers, six extra hours of rated video is a meaningful edge, and it is the 16e's quietest but most useful win.

Which should you buy refurbished?

Buy the iPhone 16e if you want Apple Intelligence, the longest software runway, and the best battery life. It is the smarter long-hold phone, and at parity pricing the newer silicon is hard to argue against. See our ranked list of the best refurbished iPhones for where it lands against the wider lineup.

Buy the iPhone 15 if you shoot wide-angle photos, lean on MagSafe accessories, or want the Dynamic Island. None of those reach the 16e at any price, so they are the only reasons to choose the older phone when both cost the same. For the broader generational picture, our iPhone 15 vs iPhone 16 comparison maps how the mainline line has moved.

Whichever you pick, buy from a seller with a clear warranty and return window. Our guide to the best places to buy refurbished iPhones ranks the sellers RefurbMe tracks, and Back Market leads on stock for both of these models.

FAQ

Does the iPhone 16e support Apple Intelligence and the iPhone 15 does not?

Yes. The iPhone 16e runs the A18 chip and supports Apple's full Apple Intelligence suite. The iPhone 15 uses the older A16 Bionic, which Apple Intelligence does not support, and no software update will change that.

Is the iPhone 16e or the iPhone 15 cheaper refurbished in 2026?

They are close. As of July 2026 on RefurbMe, an unlocked 128GB iPhone 16e in good condition starts around $341 and the iPhone 15 around $365, so the 16e is slightly cheaper. The iPhone 17 launch pushed previous-generation prices down, so price is rarely the deciding factor between these two.

Does the iPhone 16e have MagSafe and a Dynamic Island?

No. The iPhone 16e has neither. It keeps the older notch instead of the Dynamic Island and uses standard wireless charging instead of MagSafe. The iPhone 15 has both.

Is the iPhone 16e single camera enough versus the iPhone 15 dual camera?

For everyday photos, yes. The 16e's single 48MP main camera shoots sharp, bright images. The iPhone 15 adds a 12MP ultrawide for landscapes, group shots, and tight interiors, which the 16e cannot match.

Which has better battery life, the iPhone 16e or iPhone 15?

The iPhone 16e. Apple rates it at up to 26 hours of video playback versus 20 hours for the iPhone 15, helped by the efficient A18 chip and Apple's own C1 modem.

Which is the better long-term refurbished buy?

The iPhone 16e for most buyers, thanks to newer silicon, Apple Intelligence, and longer battery life at the same refurbished price. Choose the iPhone 15 only if you need the ultrawide camera, MagSafe, or the Dynamic Island.
