Is the iPad Air 5th Generation Still Worth It in 2026?

Is the iPad Air 5th generation still worth buying in 2026?

For light work, reading, streaming and handwritten notes, yes. The iPad Air 5 has Apple's M1 chip with an 8-core CPU, an 8-core GPU and 8GB of RAM, a 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display and a USB-C port (Apple). Apple lists it as compatible with iPadOS 27, and it gets Apple Intelligence.

The catch is the price ladder above it. At $319 the Air 5 is the cheapest way into an M1 iPad, yet a refurbished 11-inch iPad Air M3 with 128GB was $417 at Amazon Renewed the same day. That $98 buys a chip Apple rates nearly 2x faster, twice the base storage and Apple Pencil Pro support. If you can stretch to it, the M3 is the better buy. If $320 is a hard ceiling, the Air 5 is the one to get.

Refurbished iPad Air 5 price by seller

These are the cheapest in-stock offers RefurbMe tracked in the US on October 21, 2026, by configuration. Only offers seen by our crawlers from October 19 onward count. Grades differ by seller and were not compared, so check the condition on each listing.

Back Market had the widest choice, with offers in every color and configuration. Amazon Renewed was a dollar cheaper on the base model, but each of its listings was a single unit. Gazelle had none in stock that day. The lowest price RefurbMe has recorded is $211, at Gazelle, so a sub-$300 unit is possible if you can wait for one.

Apple sold the iPad Air 5 new from $599 for Wi-Fi and $749 for Wi-Fi + Cellular, and it went on sale on March 18, 2022 (Apple Newsroom). Apple replaced it with the M2 iPad Air in May 2024, so you can only buy it refurbished or used now.

In Canada, the cheapest Wi-Fi 64GB unit was CA$481 at Amazon Renewed, then CA$539 at Orchard. In the UK, eBay Refurbished led at £269 for Wi-Fi 64GB, ahead of Amazon Renewed at £340, musicMagpie at £364 and Back Market at £371. In the UK, a Wi-Fi 256GB unit was £349 at eBay Refurbished, only £80 above the cheapest 64GB unit.

Does Apple sell a refurbished iPad Air 5?

No. Apple's Certified Refurbished iPad store listed only iPad Air M2 and M3 models when we checked it on October 21, 2026, starting with the Refurbished 11-inch iPad Air (M3) Wi-Fi 128GB at $589. RefurbMe's stats show Apple did carry the Air 5 refurbished from September 2024, so it may come back, but today you buy it from third-party refurbishers.

Two gaps matter on a 2026 purchase. The Air 5 does not work with Apple Pencil Pro, which arrived on the iPad Air with the M2. And it only comes in one size, so a reader who wants a 13-inch Air has to look at the M2 or later.

Software support: iPadOS 27 and Apple Intelligence on the M1

Apple's iPadOS 27 page lists "iPad Air (4th generation and later, M2 and later)" as compatible, which covers the Air 5. Its Apple Intelligence page lists "iPad Air (M1 and later)", so the Air 5 gets Apple Intelligence and the Siri AI beta in iPadOS 27, which Apple says needs a device with Apple Intelligence.

iPad Air 5 vs the newer iPad Air M2, M3 and M4

Apple's own numbers set the gap. The M2 iPad Air is "nearly 50 percent faster" than the M1 model, the M3 is "nearly 2x faster" and the M4 is up to 2.3x faster. Every model from the M2 on starts at 128GB and works with Apple Pencil Pro.

The M2 price rests on one eBay Refurbished listing; the next M2 offer was $527 at Back Market for a Wi-Fi + Cellular unit. iPad Air 5 vs iPad Air 4: is the M1 worth the step up?

Usually, yes. A refurbished iPad Air 4 started at $189 at Gazelle on October 21, 2026, then $239 at eBay Refurbished, so it saves $130 against the cheapest Air 5. Apple Intelligence needs an iPad Air with M1 or later, and the Air 4 came before the M1. iPadOS 27 still supports it.

64GB or 256GB, Wi-Fi or Cellular: which configuration to pick

Pick 256GB if you store video, offline maps or a large photo library on the tablet, because the Air 5 has no storage expansion. The jump costs $113 at Back Market for Wi-Fi ($320 to $433). 64GB is enough if you stream and keep files in iCloud.

One quirk is worth using. On October 21, 2026, a Wi-Fi + Cellular 256GB unit at Amazon Renewed ($405) or Back Market ($420) cost less than the cheapest Wi-Fi 256GB unit ($433 at Back Market). A cellular model works on Wi-Fi without a plan, so if you want 256GB, look at the cellular listings first.

What to check on a refurbished iPad Air 5

Apple stopped selling this tablet in 2024, so condition varies more than on a recent model. Check these before you pay:

• The model number. The Air 5 is A2588 (Wi-Fi), or A2589 or A2591 (Wi-Fi + Cellular), printed on the back cover. An Air 4 looks much the same, so confirm the number on the listing.
• The battery. Ask the seller for the battery condition if the listing does not state it. On a tablet sold from 2022, battery wear is the first thing to check.
• The screen and Touch ID. Check for pressure marks on the display and that the Touch ID top button reads your finger.
