The three M3 chips are not three speeds of the same part. They differ in memory bandwidth and memory ceiling, and those two numbers decide how the machine behaves when you push it.

Those figures come from Apple's tech specs for the 14-inch MacBook Pro M3 and the M3 Pro and M3 Max models. All three share the same 16-core Neural Engine and the same hardware ray tracing, so the marketing gap between them is smaller than the price gap suggests.
Match the chip to your heaviest regular task, not your most ambitious one:
- The base M3 handles browsers, office work, Lightroom, Xcode on small projects and occasional 1080p editing without complaint.
- The M3 Pro is the working professional's chip. The extra 50GB/s of bandwidth and the jump to 18GB of standard memory are what keep it responsive with a 4K timeline open and thirty tabs behind it.
- The M3 Max earns its premium only on sustained work: multi-stream 4K and 8K encode, heavy 3D, and local models that need 48GB or more of unified memory. Its second video encode engine is the hardware reason exports finish faster, and it is wasted on anything lighter.
Most buyers land on the M3 Pro, and that is where the refurbished market is kindest: the 16-inch version carries the deepest discount of any M3 configuration RefurbMe tracks, 61% off its launch price.
The base M3 trap: two ports and one external display
The cheapest M3 listings are tempting for a reason that has nothing to do with the chip. A base 14-inch M3 gives you two Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports, while every M3 Pro and M3 Max has three Thunderbolt 4 ports. On a laptop with MagSafe charging, two ports is workable. It stops being workable the moment a dock, an external SSD and a display all want a socket.
External displays are the harder limit. Apple's specs for the base M3 list support for "one external display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz", plus a second only if you close the MacBook's lid. The M3 Pro drives two external 6K displays with the built-in screen still running. If your desk has two monitors on it, the base M3 is the wrong machine at any price.
The base M3 wins one thing back. Its 70Wh battery is rated for up to 22 hours of Apple TV app playback and 15 hours of wireless web, against 18 and 12 hours for the 14-inch M3 Pro, because a smaller chip is cheaper to run. 14-inch vs 16-inch: which M3 body is the better refurbished buy
Both bodies use the same Liquid Retina XDR panel spec: 1000 nits sustained full-screen, 1600 nits peak for HDR, 120Hz ProMotion. Buying the 16-inch gets you more pixels, not a better screen.
What actually changes is battery and weight. The 16-inch carries a 100Wh battery rated for up to 22 hours of Apple TV app playback against 18 hours on the 14-inch M3 Pro, and it weighs 4.7 pounds against 3.5 pounds. You feel that 1.2 pounds by the second train.
On the refurbished market the usual price logic inverts. Big laptops depreciate faster because fewer buyers want to carry them, so the 16-inch M3 Pro at $1,129 currently sits below the 14-inch M3 Pro at $1,199 while carrying 36GB of memory instead of 18GB. If the machine lives on a desk, the 16-inch is the better purchase by a wide margin as of August 2026. If it lives in a bag, pay the small premium for the 14-inch and keep your shoulder.
RAM and storage: the M3 configurations to buy and to skip
Apple silicon memory is soldered to the package, so the configuration you buy is the configuration you keep for the life of the machine. This is the decision people regret, not the chip.
On the base M3, 16GB is the floor. Apple sold that model with 8GB or 16GB as standard and 24GB to order, and the $899 listings are all 8GB machines. The cheapest 16GB 14-inch M3 on RefurbMe as of 3 August 2026 was $1,443, which is $244 more than a 14-inch M3 Pro with 18GB. Skipping the memory upgrade on the base M3 and stepping to the Pro chip instead is the better use of that money.
The M3 Pro sidesteps the question. It shipped with 18GB as standard, configurable to 36GB, which is the quiet reason it ages better than a base M3. Every M3 Pro listing in RefurbMe's US catalogue this month carried at least 18GB.
Storage is more forgiving. Apple shipped the 14-inch M3 with 512GB or 1TB, and the M3 Pro with 512GB as standard, so a listing advertising a 256GB M3 MacBook Pro is misdescribed and worth walking away from. A 512GB SSD plus a fast external drive costs far less than the same capacity built in.
The M3 Max starts at 36GB and runs to 96GB on the 14-core version or 128GB on the 16-core. Anything under 36GB is not an M3 Max, and any Max priced within a few hundred dollars of an M4 Pro is poor value.
M3 vs M4 in 2026: is the newer chip worth the gap?
The M4 MacBook Pro fixed the two complaints people had about the base M3, and it is priced accordingly on the used market.

That last row is the whole argument. The M4 only left Apple's line-up in October 2025, so its refurbished stock is young and still priced within a few hundred dollars of new. The M3 has done its depreciating already.
The Pro tier tells the same story with bigger numbers: the 14-inch M4 Pro starts at $1,779 refurbished, against $1,199 for the 14-inch M3 Pro. That $580 gap buys a faster chip and Thunderbolt 5, and almost nobody outside sustained video and 3D work will notice either.
Buy the M4 if you want the base tier and you need three ports and two monitors, because that combination genuinely does not exist on the base M3.
