Is a Refurbished iPhone 16e Worth It in 2026?

On November 3, 2026, Back Market had an unlocked 128GB unit at $361 and Amazon Renewed one at $377. Gazelle listed one at $349, last seen on October 22, so it may have sold. The cheapest unit of any kind was a 128GB phone locked to Xfinity Mobile at $263 at eBay Refurbished.

RefurbMe's Time-to-Refurb, the median number of days between Apple announcing an iPhone and the first refurbished unit RefurbMe sees in stock, is 67 days for the iPhone family (as of November 2026, RefurbMe iPhone stats). Apple announced the 16e on February 19, 2025, so refurbished supply is well established. RefurbMe counted 82 in-stock US offers on November 3, 70 of them at Back Market.

Quick verdict: who should buy a refurbished iPhone 16e

Buy one if you want Apple Intelligence on a budget. The iPhone 16e has a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, the A18 chip, a 48MP Fusion camera, Face ID and USB-C. (Apple) Apple rates it at up to 26 hours of video playback, four hours more than the iPhone 16.

Skip it if you rely on MagSafe accessories, shoot a lot of wide-angle photos or care about a smooth screen. The 16e charges wirelessly on Qi chargers only, has one rear camera and a 60 Hz display with a notch. (Wikipedia) For MagSafe, a new iPhone 17e or a refurbished iPhone 16 is the better buy, and only the iPhone 16 adds an ultra wide camera. How much does a refurbished iPhone 16e cost?

On November 3, 2026, Back Market had an unlocked 128GB iPhone 16e at $361, $238 below its launch price. Apple's launch release said the 16e was "starting at $599 (U.S.)", and the phone went on sale on February 28, 2025. (Apple Newsroom)

These are the cheapest in-stock US listings, read from RefurbMe's live prices on November 3, 2026. Sellers are listed by their cheapest unlocked unit seen in the three days before the read. Gazelle's listings were last seen on October 22.

Storage is cheap to add. Back Market's unlocked 256GB unit was $99 more than its 128GB unit, and its unlocked 512GB unit $79 more than the 256GB one.

Prices in Canada and the UK

Canadian supply is thin. RefurbMe counted 4 in-stock offers on November 3, 2026, and the cheapest was an unlocked 128GB unit at CA$589 at Amazon Renewed.

UK buyers have more choice, with 37 in-stock offers. Back Market had an unlocked 128GB unit at £358, Amazon Renewed one at £382 and eBay Refurbished one at £399. Back Market's unlocked 256GB unit was £441 and its 512GB unit £499. The seller terms below come from each seller's US pages, so check the UK or Canadian terms before you order.

Apple stopped selling it new in March 2026

Apple no longer sells the iPhone 16e. Apple announced the iPhone 17e on March 2, 2026, and Wikipedia dates the 16e's discontinuation to the same day. The "All models" shelf of Apple's US iPhone store lists the iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Air, iPhone 17, iPhone 17e and iPhone 16, which we checked on November 3, 2026. RefurbMe's read that day had no 16e from Apple's own refurbished store either, only offers from Back Market, Gazelle, Amazon Renewed and eBay Refurbished.

So refurbished is now the only way to buy a 16e. The new phone in its place, the iPhone 17e, costs $699 unlocked at Apple with 256GB, and $899 with 512GB. Apple launched it at $599, and its launch release said the 17e would "start at 256GB of storage for $599". (Apple Newsroom)

The trade-off is the warranty. Apple says most Apple hardware comes with a one-year limited warranty. A refurbished 16e comes with the seller's own terms instead, which the table further down compares.

What you give up: one camera, no MagSafe, 60 Hz and a notch

The 16e saved money by leaving things out. It has a single 48MP Fusion camera that Apple says "Also enables 12MP 2x Telephoto", with no ultra wide lens. It charges wirelessly only on Qi chargers, has an Action button but no Camera Control, and keeps a notch instead of the Dynamic Island.

What you keep matters more for most people. The 16e uses Apple's C1 modem, which Apple called "the most power-efficient modem ever on an iPhone" at launch, and the 26-hour video rating beats the iPhone 16's 22 hours.

Software: iOS 27, Apple Intelligence and support

The iPhone 16e runs iOS 27, the current release, and supports Apple Intelligence. Apple's iOS 27 compatibility page lists the iPhone 16e, and its iPhone 16e spec page says "Apple Intelligence is integrated across your apps and experiences". (Apple)

Apple publishes no end-of-support date for any iPhone, so nobody can promise a number of future iOS releases. The margin is wide, though. Battery, grades and carrier locks: what to check

Ask for 90 percent battery health or more, and treat 80 percent as the floor. Apple says batteries of iPhone 15 models and later are designed to retain 80 percent of their original capacity at 1000 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions. (Apple)

Seller grades and warranties compared

One seller's "Excellent" is not another's, so compare the terms before the price. The table below comes from each seller's own US policy pages, fetched on November 3, 2026. Gazelle, with 6 offers that day, is not in it, so read its terms on the listing.

Back Market says an Excellent device shows "Almost no signs of wear. The body may have very light micro-scratches." Amazon says most Renewed items include a 90-day return period, and that select items include its 30-day return period followed by a free 11-month limited warranty serviced by Asurion. Carrier-locked or unlocked

The cheapest 16e is carrier-locked. On November 3, 2026, eBay Refurbished's 128GB unit locked to Xfinity Mobile was $263, $98 less than Back Market's cheapest unlocked 128GB unit at $361. At 512GB the lock saves nothing. Back Market's locked 512GB units were $611, $72 more than its unlocked 512GB unit at $539.

Buy unlocked unless you already use that carrier. Apple says "Only your current carrier can unlock your iPhone". US models have no SIM tray, since Apple lists the tray as "available on models purchased outside the U.S.", so you set up an eSIM. To check a phone you receive, open Settings, General, About. Pick the 16e if the price is the point. On November 3, 2026, Back Market's unlocked 256GB 16e was $460 and its unlocked 256GB iPhone 17e $548, so the newer model cost $88 more at the same storage. A new 256GB iPhone 17e at $699 costs $239 more than the refurbished 256GB 16e.

Will refurbished iPhone 16e prices keep falling?

Slowly. The lowest price RefurbMe has recorded for a refurbished iPhone 16e in the US is $246, at eBay Refurbished on October 5, 2026. The cheapest unit on November 3, the $263 Xfinity Mobile phone, was $17 above that record. RefurbMe's iPhone 16e stats page puts the $263 floor 56% below the $599 launch price.
